Tips for Maintaining t Healthy Diet During the Holidays

Homemade Gingerbread Cookies

The holidays are celebrated with special, traditional and usually very copious meals in most families and communities. While delicious holiday meals make maintaining a healthy diet more challenging during the holidays, staying healthy is not impossible. Here are a few tips for you to help avoid unwanted weight gain and heightened blood sugar cholesterol levels during the holidays:

  • Consume five smaller meals instead of keeping your stomach empty for the one huge meal of the day – skipped meals lead to overeating and to unnecessarily burdening your digestive tract. Stick to the five small meals a day rule and you will be able to go through the holidays without weight gain;
  • Consume plenty of water, tea or fruit juices – a beer, a glass of wine or a shot of your favorite spirit is acceptable, but do not overindulge. Stick to your hydration regimen and drink at least 8 glasses of water, tea or juice – healthy hydration will reduce your appetite and will protect your digestive tract as well;
  • Move around – we all tend to get out less in winter and the winter holidays are a time for relaxation, but even so, take a short walk around the house every day and make the walk longer is the weather outside is nice.  Plan to get DNA fitness testing to determine foods your body needs and eat them during the holidays.
