What Are Healthy Calories?

Healthy Calorie Intake Along With Exercise

A calorie is the unit of measurement for the energy that the body needs for functioning – the calories content of a food or a beverage indicates the amount of energy supplied by that food or beverage to your body. However, not all calories are the same, which means that your body processes the calories from healthy food differently from the calories provided by unhealthy foods– some foods deliver healthy calories, making the body fit and energetic, while others are known to provide only unhealthy, more or less useless calories that are transformed by the body into fat deposits. Here are a few things that distinguish the two types.

The main nutrient types that we use to get the calories we need for staying alive are proteins, fats and carbohydrates. While in the past, we were taught that fats are the worst enemy of human health, many scientific studies have proved that some types of fats, such as the fats coming from vegetables and oily fish are healthy, even though they come from high calories foods because the body transforms them into energy really efficiently. Similarly, carbs also used to have a bad reputation, but now we know that the calories provided by whole grains are healthy and necessary for maintaining health and it is only refined carbs that are packed with unhealthy calories.  Many people today are eating according to diet based on DNA testing they've had done.
